As part of the monthly Wednesday Chapter series organized by the Post graduate Department of Psychology, a session on the topic “Representation Matters: The Importance of LGBTQ+ Visibility in Media and Everyday Life” was conducted on July 31, 2024. The event, held at Seminar Hall, began at 9:30 AM and featured Mr. Lalu P. Joy, Head of the Department of MSW, as the resource person. The session was inaugurated with the presence of the Principal, Geetha C.A and the, Head of the Department of Psychology, Ms. Sona T.M on the dais, setting a formal and supportive tone for the event. Mr. Lalu P. Joy began the session with an introduction to the concept of gender, providing a clear distinction between gender and sex. He explained the complex nature of gender as a social construct, separate from the biological aspects of sex. This foundational knowledge set the stage for the later discussion on sexuality and the importance of understanding and respecting diverse sexual orientations. The focus then shifted to the significance of LGBTQ+ visibility in media and everyday life. Mr. Joy emphasized how representation in media plays a crucial role in shaping societal attitudes and fostering acceptance. He illustrated the impact of positive representation on the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, highlighting the need for inclusive narratives that reflect the diversity of human experiences.
The session was highly engaging, with Mr. Joy encouraging active participation from the audience.
