About the Department
The Department of Commerce in the college was started in 2007. We offer Bachelors and Masters Degree in Commerce. Our effort is to train the students to meet challenges of modern business environment and to help them in reaping the benefits of a professional career in accounting and finance. The college is following an academic curriculum of Mahatma Gandhi University.
The Department is backed by a team of efficient, experienced and well dedicated faculty members who strive for the academic as well as interpersonal development of students. The overall development of students is ensured by the department through various orientation and skill development programmes, national and inter-national seminars, inter-college and Inter-Departmental activities and placements.
Apart from the UG and PG programmes, the Department offers add-on, certificate and diploma courses. Thus enabling our students to acquire additional certificates along with their degrees. Tally, GST, Competitive exam training, Bank Coaching, etc. are some of the additional training provided by department.

- Arya Gokuldas of M.Com (2019-2021) participated in State Level Ludo Competition and bagged 2nd prize (Silver Medal Winner) and also participated in National Level Kurash Competition.

- Mr. Bazil P of B.Com Computer Application (2017-2020) has won second prize in Caricature Competition.
- Harish K.V of B.Com Computer Application (2017-2020) got placed in Sutherland Global Services.
- Athul Krishna C.K and Jinu Joy of B.Com Taxation (2017-2020) got placed on ESAF.

All the programmes offered are affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
B.Com Finance and Taxation is an undergraduate programme offered by the Department. Currently it is one of the most sought after programme. It is a full time 3 year programme with 6 semesters. The programme has 33 papers along with a project and viva voce at the end of the sixth semester. Model and internal examinations are conducted to improve academic excellence of students. This 3 year degree programme help students in building a career especially in taxation and financial sectors.
B.Com Computer Application is an undergraduate programme which is a combination of commerce and computer application. It is a full time 3 year programme with six semesters. The programme has 33 papers and 5 lab papers along with a project and viva at the end of sixth semester. The uniqueness of the department is to have rapport with recent technological updates. Internal and model examinations, academic seminars and assignments are conducted during each semester to improve student’s performance.
It is a full time 2 year programme with 4 semesters. It has 18 papers along with a project and viva voce. Master of Commerce is a postgraduate degree programme focusing on commerce, accounting, management and economics related subjects. M.Com is most popular among aspiring teachers/lecturers and researchers. UGC NET /JRF and PhD are among popular options for M.com degree holders.

International Webinar on ‘ EDUCATION TO EMPLOYMENT ’
The Department of Commerce in association with IOAC conducted a Live International Webinar on EDUCATION TO EMPLOYMENT on 19 September 2020 through Zoom platform. The aim of the webinar was to provide awareness about International Employment opportunity. The resource person Mr. Geever Thambi (Vice President – Invisor Global inc. Canada) he explained the scope and importance of commerce Education.
Career Guidance Webinar
The Department of Commerce in association with Logic School of Management conducted a webinar on Career Guidance for final year B.Com Tax and Computer Application students on 23 October 2020 at 9.30 am through Google meet platform. The aim of the webinar was to provide awareness about professional courses like CA, CMA, and ACCA .The resource person of the webinar was Mr. HARI KRISHNAN (career consultant) who explained the scope and importance of professional course like CA, CMA, ACCA and scholarship options.
Microsoft Certified Excel Training by PG Department of Commerce
The Department of Commerce in association with IQAC conducted a Live Training on Microsoft excel for final year M.Com students on 29 October 2020 at 10 am through Google meet platform. The aim of the webinar was to provide awareness about Microsoft excel. The resource person of the webinar was Mr. JOMON JOSEPH (Business consultant Strategist) who explained the scope and importance of Microsoft excel.
Financial Awareness Programme
The Department of Commerce organised a Webinar on Financial Awareness on 26 March 2021 at 7pm through Webex platform. The aim of the webinar was to provide awareness about various Investment Patterns. The resource person of the webinar was Dr. Reji M A (Principal St. Thomas Arts and Science College, Puthencruz and SEBI Finance Education Resource person).
Department of Commerce frequently conducts Faculty Development Programme for our department Staff. The main objective of this programme is to improve faculty’s ability in carrying out research, to equip with advanced teaching technique and to provide opportunities to further widen the knowledge base and to pursue research.
Faculty Exchange Programme
Faculty exchange programme presents a unique opportunity for interaction between different universities and institutions. This will enrich students of both institutions provide them with an opportunity to learn concepts and ideas presented in an entirely different perspective. PG department of commerce NASC Mulanthuruthy in collaboration with Department of Commerce NIMIT Pongam conducted an online faculty exchange programme on 8th and 9th of September 2020 through Google meet platform. The 3 hour session was conducted for 3rd and 5th semester B.Com students of both the institutions. The sessions were on the subjects Financial Market Operations and Income Tax.
The Faculty Exchange Programme was a great success, as the students from both the institutions got an opportunity to augment their knowledge and have benefited the faculties to extend their teaching experience. The Faculty Exchange Programme created a greater bond among the home and host institutions.

Commerce Association Inauguration 2020-21
The activities of Commerce Association of Nirmala 2020-21 was inaugurated on 27th August 2020 at 10 am through Google meet platform Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan (Former CEO and co-founder of Infosys) was the chief guest who inaugurated the function. In his address he explained “The career opportunities in India and abroad after covid-19″.
Commerce Association Inauguration 2019-20
The activities of Commerce Association of Nirmala 2019-20 was inaugurated on 28th November 2019 at 1:30 pm. Dr. Rajagopala Nair (Dean of BRIM) was the chief guest who inaugurated the function. In his address he explained “Artificial Intelligence in Marketing”.
Quiz club was formed to update the knowledge of students in various fields like academic, General Knowledge, Analytical Abilities, Quantitative Reasoning etc. quiz programs are conducted at regular intervals for the betterment of students. Students were also given an opportunity to represent the college in quiz competition conducted by other institutions.
We are enthusiastically engaged in conducting inter college and inter department fests, for assembling aspirants from various colleges with high competitive spirit and also to develop leadership and management capabilities in our students.
As part of intercollegiate fest “SRESHTA 2K19” Department of Commerce diligently organized three events:
1)SAMEEKSHA (Treasure Hunt) The time bound activity helps the participants to discover and explore, solve problems, test new ideas, experience friendships, cooperation, and teamwork.
2) PRAJNA (Crisis Management) PRAJNA emphasize on skills and techniques required to identify, assess, understand and cope up with a serious crisis.
3) SUBODHA (General Quiz) it updated the knowledge of students in various fields like academic, general knowledge, analytical abilities, quantitative reasoning and provides information about present scenario.
As part of interdepartmental fest “FISCA LISTA 2K18” Department of Commerce Showcased various competitions including:
Guessing the Brand, Best Manager and also a colorful flash mob performance
As part of intercollegiate fest “KAARYAMUKHA 2K17” Department fest saw a lot of ideas and opportunities unfold.
The various competitions included Business Quiz, Funny Marketing and a flash mob struck a chord in the hearts of audience.
Training & Skill Development
International Yoga Day was observed on June 21 2019. Mr. Rakesh K, “Art of Living Faculty” conducted a training session explaining the importance of regular practice of Yoga. He demonstrated yoga postures which can be practiced regularly.
PANEL DISCUSSION ON “UNION BUDGET 2021”
A panel discussion on Union Budget 2021 was conducted on February 16 2021. Five teams participated in the discussion. Aparna Krishnan and Amala C V (First B.Com Tax) won the prize. Vrinda S Nair (Second B.Com Tax) was selected as best speaker.
YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND SKILL ENHANCEMENT WORKSHOP
Four days YES Plus Youth Empowerment workshop was conducted for M.Com students from 9th December 2019 to 12th December. Clinical Psychologist and Art of living Trainer Smt. Salini Rakesh was the Resource Person for the programme. The workshop taught Breathing Techniques like Pranayama and Sudarshankriyan.
SECRET OF MUSIC
A highly professional Music Therapy session was conducted on June 27 2020 by renowned music director Mr. Alex Paul. Music therapy is a proven method of improving an individual’s quality of life by touching all aspects of mind, body, brain and behavior. All the first year students participated in the session.
ANTI DRUGS AWARENESS PROGRAMME
Anti drugs awareness programme was conducted on July 26 2020 by Mr. Job V.T and Mr. Mathew Varghese of Narcotic cell. They spoke on the ill effects of drug .they also stressed the need to prevent children and youth from drug abuse.
Seminar on “PRACTICAL ACCOUNTING AND TAX PRACTICE”
The Department of Commerce conducted a seminar on “Practical Accounting and Tax Practice” on 25th March 2021 at 10.30 am. The aim of the seminar was to provide awareness about prevailing Accounting and Tax Practices. The resource person of the webinar was Mr. S Omanakuttan (Centre Co-ordinator Tax Study Vocational Training Centre)
2020-2021 – Nirmala Arts and Science College Mulanthuruthy organized an Orientation Programme for the newly joined graduation students through Google meet on 30th October 2020.The programme had two sessions. Prof. .Dr. Dileep Kumar -Former Vice Chancellor of Sree Sankara University Kalady inaugurated the function. He stressed the need of students to be more responsible to the society by quoting various examples from different facets of life. Shri. Thankkachan, (Director of Rural Science and Technology Thuruthikkara) inaugurated the second session. He shared the role of Science and Technology in this era. He stressed the need of cooperation by our ED club with Rural Science and technology.
2019-2020 – An Orientation Programme was conducted by Fr. Eby Varkey on 25th June 2019 for the first year students. He encouraged and emphasized the students to lead a life counting God’s blessings and dignity of human life. Another two day Orientation Programme was conducted by Dr. Ratheesh Ambat on the topic “Conscious Engineering and Career Goal setting” on 20th November 2019 to 26th November for second year students.
2018-2019 – An Awareness Programme was conducted for the first year students by Dr. Mary Matilda, former Principal of Maharaja’s college and known Personality Trainer, during the month of August. She spoke at length about the importance of understanding and setting right goals in life and how to plan the path for achieving it.
2017-2018 – An Orientation for the students was conducted from 2017 June 12th -15th for the first year students. Dr. Ratheesh Ambat, Corporate trainer, stressed importance of career and personality development in life. The session was very fruitful to the students.
2016-2017 – An Orientation Programme was conducted for the teaching staff of the college during the month of August by Rev. Fr. Thomas Chakariyil. He inspired the audience by valuable words about tools and strategies for effective teaching-learning procedures. He also spoke about desirable Behaviors among students for their overall development.
The faculty members of Commerce department conduct special remedial coaching for slow learners. It aimed at improving the academic excellence of students in various subjects to reduce failure and dropout rates. The main objective of remedial coaching to strengthen student’s knowledge and aptitude and to prepare slow learners for competitive exams.
Mentoring programme is conducted to help the students to strengthen their varied capabilities and to build inter personal relationship between the teachers and students.
Each Teacher is assigned with the task of mentoring 21 Students. All mentors keep a Confidential Mentoring Register about their students. This reports are periodically evaluated and monitored by Mentoring Committee
Study Tour and Industrial Visits
Study Tour & Industrial visits has its own importance in moulding students who are pursuing various UG and PG Progammes. It is considered as part of college curriculum and its objectives include providing students with insights and practical knowledge in various working environments. It enhances the horizon of knowledge by experiencing the outside world.
Parent Teacher Association
The Commerce Department conducts open houses on a regular basis. These are arranged twice a year. A Parent-Teacher interaction is a great opportunity to share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, testing data, assessments, portfolios, and assignments. These are also forums for taking timely and corrective steps.
It is a matter of great pride to our department that students secure placement through campus placements with various prestigious organizations. The Career Development and Placement Cell in the College train our students in analytical procedures involving group discussions, aptitude test etc. to prepare the students to face Interviews confidently..

PG Department of Commerce conducted a bridge course on basics of accounting to first year B.Com taxation and Computer Application students. Students for the course were assessed on the basis of a written exam. Students who have scored 50% and below were admitted for the course. Classes were conducted during December/ January. Classes were handled by senior faculty members.
